2015 wasn't exactly the year I thought I'd have. I thought there were be a new marathon PR and Boston qualifier. I thought I would get to race triathlon age group nationals in Milwaukee. But an major injury took out months and months of training and racing and everything changed. That's okay. Things happen for a reason. I'm moving on and experiencing new things, like LOTS and LOTS of swimming.
Let's review 2015!
Swimming - 215,550 yards ~ 122.50 miles
I swam all year long, but I didn't begin a lot of swimming until I broke my hip. Now I'm swimming nearly 10,000 yards a week and loving it.
Biking - 473.85 miles
In preparation for nationals, I was really spending quality time on my bike and learning about power, etc. When I broke my hip I stopped riding completely. I don't envision myself riding for training any time in 2016. There will be no triathlons this year. I SWEAR!
Running - 710.72 miles
You know, for having to miss over three months of running, this is a pretty good number. It's been a long time since I've had a year of 1000 miles. Hopefully 2016 will be that year. No injuries, please!!!!
Strength Training - 14.17 hours
Gosh, I wish this was a bigger number. As I get older and can't put in the mileage I once did, I should really be getting stronger to hold everything together. Maybe this should be a goal in 2016.
YMCA Visits - 184
Cost Per Visit - $4.53
I really used my Y membership this year. Now that I work there, I'm starting to feel like I live there. They should probably just stick a cot for me in a back room.
Races - 6
My races ranged from 5ks to the marathon to an aquathlon. I love to race and would love to race all the time. Coach doesn't love that idea so 2016 will probably be a little more strategic. 2016 will be a fast year. I have nothing planned over the 10k-ish distance. And maybe I'll do a swim meet. Maybe.
Picture of the Day!!
Once of my goals for 2016 is to take more pictures. I would love to say I'm going to do it every day in 2016, but let's be realistic. Life is busy and is quite boring in the winter. How may pictures of my kid sleeping do you need?
We got a babysitter this evening and went to see Star Wars 3D. Dave had already seen it but I wanted to see it too. It was really good. But, I love the Star Wars franchise. I'm not hard to please.

August Totals
August was the month I got back to running. Well, jogging anyway. Nevertheless, it felt good to do it. I didn't have a training plan or clearance to schedule a race so I found it hard to stay motivated but I did do a little.
Swimming - 4500 yards. This is pathetic. I will have more yardage than that in the first week of September. You would think since I am at the swimming pool every day working that I would at least jump in during my breaks and swim a little.
Biking - 8 miles. One bike ride. I'm over the bike.
Running - 39.79 miles. It's not much but it's a lot more than it was. And it was actually running/jogging and not walking.
Strength Training - 2.42 hours. My sister is a certified personal trainer and offers her friend a circuit training class twice a week at the local church. Last week I attended. I've got to hand it to her, it was not easy. I was sore for days. Good job kiddo. I might have to check it out again.
YMCA Visits - 16. So, August was supposed to be the month that my employee discount kicked in. But, we still haven't seen it yet reflected in our credit card. I only counted the visits by the husband and the kiddo and not mine since my new discount gives me a free membership. However, I still counted the full price in the calculation so...
YMCA Cost per Visit - $5.33. This would have been a lot less had I counted my visits.
September is going to look a lot different. I started training with my coach again on August 31st. I can't wait to get back to a regular training schedule with races on the calendar.

July Totals
Is my exercise in July actually worth an entry? Not really. I was lazy. I gained a lot of weight. I got a job. I got busy. The calendar has now turned and I SWEAR I will get back to regularity soon. Really soon.
Swimming - 3800 yards
After only being allowed to swim with my hip injury, I am just tired of swimming. 3800 yards should be a daily workout, not a monthly total.
Biking - 10.55 miles
Two bike rides. Two effing bike rides.
Running/Walking - 28.22 miles
This is nothing to brag about, but after weeks and months of no running, it feels so good to get back to it. I've been doing peppy walks with the stroller and even throwing in some jogging intervals. I've also put the elliptical machine to work at the Y.
Strength - 1.25 hours
Y Visits - 11
Cost per Visit - $7.76 - I have no idea how I'm going to calculate all this next month when my membership becomes free. I guess I have to stop counting my visits and only count Anderson and Dave's. Right?
I'm so glad this month is over. I'm ready to move on.

Week in Review
Remember the July Challenge when Dave and I vowed to work out every day? Yeah, we suck. At least I'm doing better than Dave on that front. This week I was given the go-ahead to get on the "Return to Running" program. Immediately I started on the elliptical and I've been doing some solid walking outside. Here's the week in a snippet.
Swimming - 1500 yards
5 x 300 pull
Biking - Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I'm soooo over biking.
Walking/Elliptical - 6.42 miles
I was only allowed to start at 20 minutes on the elliptical and build up to 40 in the next two weeks. I did one elliptical for 20 minutes, did one walk on the treadmill, and one longer walk outside with the stroller.
Strength Training - 0.25 hours
I am using my conditioning cards and now I can do most of them because the hip is healed-ish. This week's exercises included Russian twists, forward lunges, upright rows, reverse lunges, pushups with legs on stability ball, one-legged squats (I could only do one set on the injured leg. They hurt a little too much.), bench press, pull ups, burpees, and skull crushers. Boy, was I sore after this workout.
Next week I start physical therapy. I also hope to really get these legs moving.

Week in Review
Because of my busy week saving lives and the exhaustion that comes with it, working out fell to the wayside this week. Plus my hip was incredibly sore after so much kicking in the pool. I didn't do much - one swim, one bike, one weight lifting session, and two walks on the treadmill. And all of that was finished by Wednesday. Thursday through the rest of the weekend, well, I was just too tired. I'll try again next week.
Swim - 300 yards
Yep 300 yards. That was the swimming portion of the lifeguarding test. I wonder how much I actually swam the rest of the weekend with the abundance of rescues we had to do?
Bike - 5.29 miles
I did one bike on Tuesday evening. It was only a half hour on the trainer. I'm sick of biking. I don't like biking. When I get the all clear to go back to running, I think running is going to be my primary focus.
Strength training - 0.25 hours
Toe raises, dips with feet on the stability ball, dirty 30s (bicep curls, shoulder/flys, tricep kickbacks), side planks, reverse crunches, chin-ups, back extensions, horizontal rows, pushup rows, and skull crushers.
Walking - 3.5 miles
Most days we were given an hour for lunch. I would eat my lunch quickly, by myself, and then hit the treadmill for a slow walk. Yes, I have not technically been cleared to walk for exercise, but I'm also going 20 minute/miles. That's what I would do if I were taking the dog for a walk. I'm assuming it's alright.
It's now been eight weeks since I last ran. I'm starting to get itchy. I need to run. I want to run. Thursday I have my doctor's appointment. I don't have my hopes set very high for running, but at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel now.

June Totals
Wow! June went fast! It was a jam-packed month filled with some working out, much loving on my boy, and lots and lots of work around the house. Oh, and I took a picture every day and blogged every day (except for last Wednesday - darn it!).
Swimming - 15,700 yards ~ 8.9 miles
Really, I should have swam a lot more than this considering it was the only exercise I could do for the majority of the month. I had a hard time motivation myself, though, to go to the Y and just pull in the water. By the end of the month I was doing a little kicking, but generally these workouts are slow and short.
Biking - 28.92 miles
I got the green light to ride my bike in the middle of the month. I have done some spinning, although keeping it light and all inside on the trainer. The most I've done is 40 minutes. I'm hoping to build back up to an hour soon.
Walking - 2 miles
I have yet to be cleared for aerobic walking, but I have done a little, keeping it nice and light and SLOW on the treadmill. Seriously, 20 minute miles. I want to walk more, but I'll keep it super slow and easy until the doctor officially gives me the okay.
Strength
I don't have any official numbers to report, but I have been doing some strength. I've mostly kept to seated weight lifting and core, although I have done very light weights standing up. No lunges or squats just yet.
YMCA
I feel like I've been in the YMCA one billion times in the last 7 weeks (more on this tomorrow), although it was really only 20 visits between the three of us in June. That's a cost per visit of $4.27.
My next doctor's appointment is in the middle of July so hopefully the swimbikerunwalkstrength numbers will only continue to grow as the summer goes on.

Week in Review
The motivation has come back a little. I did alright with my workouts last week. I swam once and biked three times. I'm craving running like nobody's business, but at least biking is helping me feel like I'm actually doing something aerobic.
Swimming - 2000 yards
10 x 200 Rest :15
Odds regular easy swim.
Evens pull breathing bilaterally.
Yes, I did a little kicking. I kept the kicks really small, mostly kicking from my ankles. It wasn't so bad. It was nice to not have a pull buoy.
Biking - 16.9 miles
I did three rides on the trainer; all of them easy. Two of them were for thirty minutes and one was for 35. I even got Dave to join me for the 35 minute ride!
I did do a little strength training, mostly core and some arms. It was nothing important to write in my training journal so I won't bore you with the specifics. Tune in Monday and Tuesday next week for more information on a lot more workouts coming my way.

Week in Review
Again, not much to report about last week: two very short swims and a bike ride. Maybe there was a walk? I don't remember. I'll have to check on that.
I did a short swim (1000 yards) on Wednesday where I was fed up with the crazies at the Y. You can read about that here.
The next day I put my patience in my back pocket and did a slightly longer swim of 1200 yards. This one was a straight swim (with a pull buoy, of course).
I also did my first bike ride since the hip injury. I rode 30-ish minutes yesterday on the trainer in the granniest of granny gears for five miles. I also did some core and arm strength but nothing to write home about.
In other news, this lack of running and training? Yeah I've gained 4 pounds in 5 weeks. I've got to get back to running. I DO NOT want to diet (or let's be real, eat well).

May Totals
The month started off so strong. I was getting back into running after taking time off after the Athens Marathon. I was excited about trying again at the Cleveland Marathon. Unfortunately, I started having some pain in my hip. We all know how that turned out: broken and torn. The end of the month consisted of lots of nothing and then the beginning of a bunch of swimming to come.
Swim - 15,300 yards ~ 8.7 miles
Bike - 38.64 miles (all indoor on the trainer)
Run - 57.5 miles
Strength - 0.25 hours
YMCA Visits - 17
Cost per Visit - $5.02
Unfortunately, I'm probably not going to meet my goal of 1000+ miles of running this year. That's okay. It's better to take care of myself. I might get a thousand miles of swimming, though.

Week in Review
Listen, I can't sit still. If I sit still I'm going to weigh 400 pounds. Plus, working out is good for my sanity. Even though I received the devastating news that my hip was is jacked up this week, I still did some good workouts.
I started the week with a half hour spin on the trainer before learning I wasn't allowed to bike. I also did some weight training with this workout. I did 3 x 10 bench presses at 30 pounds, ball crunches, and dips off the weight bench with my legs on the stability ball.
The rest of the week all I did was swimming and all of it pulling with a buoy. Stupid hip. The first day I did 4 x 500 with :30 rest. The next day I did 2000 yards straight pull. And on Saturday I did 20 x 100 pull with paddles with Dave. He didn't use any toys but we still swam together.
I'm committing myself to as much swimming as I can handle until I've been giving the green light to do something else.
Now if I could commit myself to eating better. Much, much better....

Week in Review
I had every intention of writing every day last week, but I blinked and before I knew it a whole week had passed. Where did it go? So, I'll try again this week. Here's what I was up to this week.
Swimming - 5300 yards
Two longer swims this week, one of which was 3000 yards. I had a biopsy on my ear this week so wearing a swim cap and goggles was not exactly pain free or fun. My favorite part of my swims this week was the monkey toy on the bottom of the toy that would smile at me with each passing length.
Biking -14.33 miles
Honestly, I can't tell you anything about the bike rides. They were at the beginning of the week and they were uneventful. I do remember that I stepped up the heat acclimation with them by not only riding with long sleeves and no fan, but this time I added a winter hat.
Running - 23.76 miles
Running was full of highs and lows. I had a great track workout where I really tackled my demons and felt great and was moving with speed. I also had a "long" run that was just terrible. It was HOT and my hip was hurting (more on this soon) and I just didn't want to do it. I have no idea what is going to happen in my upcoming marathon. Training has been crazy sporadic since my last race.
I guess you could say this upcoming week is full-on taper as my marathon is next Sunday.

April Totals
Even with a taper, a marathon, and a complete week off while on vacation, I still managed some good numbers this month. There were probably a few workouts I missed, but what is done is done and nothing would have changed the outcome of my marathon except for some better weather and a lobotomy. Here we go...
Swimming - 13,350 yards ~ 7.6 miles
Sure, it wasn't the swimming of last month, but had I done some of the swims that were assigned during the week after my marathon, I would have been closer. I think I also didn't do some swims at the beginning of the month because I had a head cold. Seven miles of swimming is still quite a bit when the main focus is still running.
Biking - 78.94 miles
I had one bike this month that was actually supposed to be outside. Unfortunately, it was a mere 30 degrees that day so I did it inside. Hence, I still haven't taken the bike outside yet this year. I had a few bike rides I missed while I was on vacation, but I have ridden my cruiser up and down the neighborhood. Does that count?
Running - 78.64 miles
Isn't it amazing how closely my running and biking numbers are? It's been like this for most of the year. Wild! I am right at 400 miles for the year so still on target for over 1000 miles. That's kinda cool.
YMCA - 12 visits
YMCA Cost Per Visit - $7.11
I can't believe April has come and gone. What will May bring us (besides flowers)?

Week in Review
The taper started this week. I caught a cold. I lost my mind. I missed some workouts. Whatever. I'm trained and ready. Nothing I do now will change the results next week.
Swimming - 3000 yards
I had three swims on the schedule this week, but I only did one. I lost motivation to get over to the Y and do the swims. Plus I was sick and yuck and I didn't want to take the little one to childcare only for him to catch his millionth cold this spring.
Biking - 24.28 miles
I did two indoor bike rides this week - one shorter, one longer. Neither of them were especially hard. Mostly they focused on cadence. Oh how I wish all bike rides were like taper bike rides. That'll change in a few weeks.
Running - 24.29 miles
Monday was the long run where I hit the intervals but felt terrible. I also tried a track workout that was disastrous. Finally, the week ended with a fun, strong run with friends.
Strength - 0 hours
There were no strength workouts this week. Yahoo!!!

Week in Review
My weeks have been all screwed up for a while. I do some workouts from a week ago; some from this week and then put them in whatever order makes sense. In the end, I do all the workouts and that's what is important. Right?
Swimming - 4750 yards
Only two swims this week - one long, one shorter. The longer one was about 150 yards longer than expected as my coach can sometimes not add correctly. At least it was only 150 yards and not 1150 yards longer. Glass half full!!!
Biking - 24.49 miles
I actually had a workout that called for outside biking this week. Unfortunately, it was 35 degrees outside. Um, no. I'm not that hardcore. And also unfortunately, the kiddo keeps ripping apart his train tracks while I'm on the bike (and Dave's not home) so every few minutes I had to get off the bike and fix the tracks. I'm not sure the bike rides were very productive this week. I may need to put the baby back in the chair and show cartoons while I ride so I can do my workouts continuously. Any of you have any good suggestions for keeping the kiddo occupied when I need to do my workouts at home alone?
Running - 22.84 miles
Yes, I know this is not a lot of miles, but really, I've still got a workout or two to do this coming week that were part of last week. I like to think of my workouts not as weekly but as a collection of the bigger picture. I get them done. Whatever. I had a great 11 miler earlier in the week that included a lot of faster running. My overall average was faster than my last half marathon pace (of course, that was in the snow). Mid-week I had another speedy workout that Dave and Anderson were able to join me on (on the bike). It was nice to have company for once. I have done this entire training cycle alone. One last semi-long run that I'll do today and then I guess I'll officially be tapering!!!
There were no strength routines this week, although I did do some pushups and core routines by myself during TV commercials.
Almost there. Almost there. Almost there. Almost there. Almost there.

March Totals
I cannot believe March has come to a close already. Only a few days until my marathon. Where has the time gone.
It's gone into training. Good grief! Look at these numbers?!
Swimming - 27,450 yards ~ 15.6 miles
Woah. Just woah. I have spent a lot of time at the Y in the chlorine this month. I believe this is at least double what I swam last month. Am I training for an ironman instead of an Olympic triathlon?
Biking - 104.42 miles
One hundred miles may not seem like a lot of biking miles, but these were all done indoors on the trainer. Most rides were only about 11 miles. You do the math. That's quite a bit of time on my bike. I have done cadence workouts, threshold workouts, workouts where I stood up a lot. I had mechanical problems that required more knowledge and help than I could handle. And I dropped my chain about a thousand times. I'm getting stronger on the bike and it is showing in my run too. It'll be interesting to see how this translates to riding outside. Spring and warmer temperatures are coming soon. Right? RIGHT???
Running -116.53 miles
This could have been more. I missed a 9 miler just over a week ago when I had a head cold and I didn't do a 5ish miler today as I was recovering from a tough run yesterday. I'm still hoping to get those done, honestly. Sure, I'm not running a whole lot of miles, but I've had GREAT WONDERFUL POWERFUL SUCCESSFUL runs and I've really seen great improvement in my running. Only a few weeks until we find out how it has all worked out.
Strength - 1 hour
All short core routines. I guess all my strength routines were done in the pool this month.
YMCA Visits - 27
Cost Per Visit - $3.16
I'm sure making use of the Y membership this year!
Onto April....

Ugh! The Bike!
This evening I did a bike workout that required a lot of gear changing - small gears to big gears, big gears to small gears. I had 10 intervals like this. In just my first one, I dropped my chain. Ugh! I put it back on, went upstairs and scrubbed my hands, and continued on with my workout. On my third interval I dropped my chain again. You've got to be kidding me. Fixed, hands washed, continue on. Two more intervals and the chain got dropped for a third time. I probably should have stopped the workout at this point. I got back on the bike and now my power meter wasn't reading correctly. Please, someone send a text asking to go get ice cream?!?!?! I soldiered on, though, and finished the workout. What doesn't kill me makes me stronger, right?
Have you had a workout that has totally gone awry?
What was the worst workout you've had that you got it done anyway?

Week in Review
Last week was rest week. Thank goodness. There's only a few weeks to go until the marathon and to be honest, I'm feeling a little burnt out. This is normal for me, but hard to overcome. I just want to lay on the floor and watch tv, not run. But, I keep reminding myself that I've come so far and done so well and it's only a little bit longer until the reward.
Swimming - 4800 yards
Only two swims this week and both were pretty tame. I don't really have a whole lot to say about that. :)
Biking - 19.91 miles
There were two bikes this week. They were both pretty tame too. They were more about cadence than power. I cut one of them short to go on a family walk. There's more important things in life.
Running - 23.14 miles
I had hoped to run a race this past weekend but unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate. Our plan was a 10 miler in Pittsburgh but Saturday's forecast was 100% chance of rain. We didn't want to drive 3 hours and pay for a hotel for a soggy race. Instead I just did an easier, shorter run on the treadmill. The hard workout for the week was a track workout of one billion times 400m. Just kidding. It was 12 intervals, but that seems like a lot. I've got to admit, track workouts make me crazy anxious. For being a track kid, the track makes me nervous. But I dominated this workout and that makes me happy.
Strength - 0.25 hours
Just one core workout this week. I better look bangin' in a swimsuit this summer!
Next week is BIG! I hope I survive!

Week in Review
Whew! It was a big week and I rocked it!
Swimming - 7200 yards
I swam half as many yards this week as I swam all of last month! I had three swims this week: one was 2800 yards, one was 2400 yards, and one was 2200 yards. The long one was a recovery swim. It was long but not a lot of difficult stuff. The second one had a lot of sprints to it. The third one was actually a continuous swim and I was pleased to see my 100 yard average to be 1:43.
Biking - 25 miles
I "only" had two bikes this week and both were at least an hour long. There was lots of BIG gear riding, with LOTS of sweating! I'm feeling pretty pleased with how my biking is coming along.
Running - 33.98 miles
Had I known I was 0.02 miles away from a round number, I would have done 0.02 more miles. Good grief! I don't know how many times I ran this week. There was a recovery run (see post from Friday) that was easy and slow. I also did short mileage with a warmup/cool down for some strength work and a short run off the bike on Saturday. I did a speed workout that will hopefully be my last treadmill run for a while (and it was an amazing run). And finally, I rocked my long run this morning - 18+ miles at an overall pace faster than my Boston Marathon qualifying pace. Just to quantify - I was not TRYING to run fast. My workout had a long slow build followed by an hour of race pace stuff. My goal is to run a PR which is quite quick. Therefore, my run was quick. I was really happy with my runs this week.
Strength - 0.25 hours
Only one core workout this week. I did a different variation of last week's, using a stability ball instead of a medicine ball. It was a GOOD workout.
Next week is a step back week and there may even be a race at the end of the week. Unfortunately, the weather is looking like rain for the weekend so I'm not sure I'll enter the race.

Mechanical Problems
In the last two weeks my bike has decided not to shift into the big front gear. I don't know what changed but something did. I messed with a few screws here and there and wound up with my front derailer cable coming unattached and frayed. Awesome. I contacted my local running shop and they were able to help me out the same day. Dave took his lunch time to drop off my bike and picked it up after work. I had to have my front derailer cable replaced. In addition, my front and rear derailer were aligned, my rear brake adjusted, and the front headset tightened. The bike guy said it was "dangerously lose." Who knew?!
When Dave brought my bike home he left it leaning against the dining room table. I moved it downstairs later in the evening. But for one minute we both took our eyes off Anderson and this is what happened...
I should also mentioned that my husband, without the baby in tow, somehow managed to knock over a bunch of bikes, domino-style, while getting my bike into the store. Seriously, I could have done that myself if I had brought Anderson.
Unfortunately, my shifting is still not great. It's better but still problematic. Soft-pedaling doesn't really work, but pulling up with my left pedal seems to get the gear in place. For now, it's okay. But, I might take my bike back in a few days to see what else can be done. Almost all my workouts have big gear work, so I kind of need it to work.
Have you ever tried to fix your bike mechanical problems by yourself? Did you create more problems that you solved?

Don't look at the ugliness of this bathroom. It has yet to be renovated.

Week in Review
The week started out so well and fizzled out by the end. I blame the weather. Really.
Swimming - 2400 yards
I only had one swim on the schedule this week. Seems weird since I was coming off a race, but I'm not complaining that I didn't have to get all my junk together, get the kiddo ready, and drive to the gym, etc.
Biking - 34.87 miles
Three bike rides this week. One was just a spin to shake off the race legs. The other two contained more stuff like cadence and power. One of the rides had a lot of hard stuff in a big gear. In the last week my bike has decided it doesn't want to shift to a big gear anymore. I haven't had time to take it to a bike shop, so I suffered through this workout. I would have to stop my Garmin before each interval, figure out how to get the gear to the big ring, and then restart the interval. This was really a pain in the ass as the intervals were maximum of 30 seconds in length. Halfway through the ride I decided to do a little mechanic work on the bike. I tweaked and rearranged, got back on my bike and immediately dropped my chain. Argh! Of course, I had trouble getting the chain back on which resulted in grease ALL.OVER.MY.HANDS!!! All of this crap made it impossible for me to do my run off the bike; I had an appointment I had to get to and still needed to get myself and the boy showered.
Running - 17.23 miles
Seventeen miles is not very much when you're training for a marathon. And it should have been at least 10-15 miles more. Gosh darn it! First, I missed the run off the bike as mentioned above. Then came the long run. My long runs are scheduled for Sunday. I have been trying my best to follow the schedule and do my workouts when assigned. Sunday morning I awake to snow and lots of it. And it snowed all day. We got, like, six inches of snow. Did I moved to Boston??? I had specific paces I had to hit during this workout and I knew I couldn't get them done in the snow. So I headed down to the treadmill, again. Gah! I'm so sick of the treadmill. And I like to treadmill run! I decided to break the run up into two different runs - the first would be an hour of "warmup"; the second would be the "meat" of the run with the paces and whatnot. Unfortunately, I only did the first hour. I just couldn't drag myself back downstairs to do another treadmill run. I am sooo over winter!!!
Strength - 0.25 hours
I only had a core workout this week. All the exercises were done with a medicine ball. Some of them were hard and left me quite sore for many days.
Now that it is March I hope to be running lots of miles as my marathon is just around the corner and of course doing a lot of swimming and biking too. Training never stops. Which reminds me, I better get my buns out there and train. See ya!!!
