Our Whirlwind Weekend in Oklahoma

As of Wednesday morning last week we were driving to Oklahoma.  Plane tickets were atrocious!  We were going to take two days to get there, two days to return, and we would be bringing Anderson.  But, we kept searching the internet and finding different options and finally by Wednesday afternoon we had found a more reasonable set of plane tickets.  We would fly out of Dayton to Tulsa and we would need to leave Anderson at home for the weekend with my parents.  The plan was in motion.

Dave Runs a 5K
We arrived into Tulsa late Friday, checked into our hotel, and immediately fell into deep sleep.  Our alarms were set early, though, as Dave also wanted to do a race in Oklahoma and found a small 5K at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa.  It wasn't a very big race, and not particularly fast, but Dave did walk away with first in his age group.

Oral Roberts' campus

We're Going to Jail
After Dave's race we drove to Oklahoma City for my race.  Our trip involved a toll road.  Dave had done his research prior to the drive and we had enough cash for the trip.  Or so we thought.  Most of the toll stations were not manned and required exact change.  Luckily there were change machines so we got lots of quarters for our $5 bill.  We thought we would only have to pay $4 for the whole trip.  We were wrong.  At one point we didn't have enough money and had to write a check.  Yep a check.  For $1.15.  Then, after lunch, after we had made change for more money, we made it to another toll stop where the fee was $1.15.  For some reason, Dave had to make change again.  Except this time, the change machine didn't work.  And we only had a quarter.  So we put the quarter in the machine and drove away.  We are fugitives from the law.  Oklahoma wants us for our 90 cents.

PS - We paid that 90 cents when we came back on the toll road on Sunday.

Thin Walls
El Reno was the location of my race.  Although a suburb of Oklahoma City, it seemed like the middle of nowhere.  There were a few establishments and very few hotels.  We stayed at the Best Western which should have been renamed the Worst Western.  It was awful.  We were right off the freeway which was loud.  Then there were the thin walls.  I could hear every time someone went to the bathroom, flushed the toilet, had anything to say, and oh yeah, the neighbors having sex.  MULTIPLE TIMES!  I was starting to wonder if there was a prostitute in the room next to us.  There were truckers who would park at the end of the motel and I was wondering if they were keeping company in the room next to us.  After the second sexual encounter I thought if I heard it one more time I was calling the cops or the front desk, at least.

Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial
On our way back to Tulsa after my race we detoured to downtown Oklahoma City to see the bombing memorial.  I had seen it before, I think, more than 10 years ago.  Dave had never seen it.  It's so very neat: poignant, artistic, somber, beautiful.

I Heart Tulsa
Our last night in Oklahoma was spent in downtown Tulsa.  We were able to walk to many activities and really took advantage of the local scene.  We started with a trip to Valkyrie which is a bar like you might see on Esquire's "Best Bars in America."  There is no menu at this bar.  There are seasonal drinks written on a chalkboard or if you don't like any of those, you tell the bartender what you like and he'll mix you up something special.  My first drink was some concoction that had a whole bunch of unknown alcohols to me.  The only thing I could name was strawberry syrup.  It was fruity and spicy and awesome.  Dave had a mule with carrot juice, cinnamon, and ginger.  It had a little kick but was really good.

We walked to Guthrie Green where we took in some live music.  Then we walked to "The Center of the Universe" where science met art and we made cool echos.  Dave and I got engaged under a whisper arch so this was super cool to us.  Dinner was at Mi Mexicali where we had some tasty food and margaritas.  Then it was back to Valkyrie where we enjoyed a second round of drinks.  Mine was called "The Bees Knees" and was a gin martini with honey and lemon.  Dave had "The Schute of All Evil" which had beet juice in it.  To me it tasted like eating the earth.  I'll stick to my fruity drinks.  Our flight was stupid early the next day, so we called it a night.

Houston (or the parts I actually left the hotel room for)

First, thank you all for the nice comments in the last post. It means a lot that people care and are willing to be there, even if it's just virtually. I'm working really hard to get and stay well. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

As I mentioned in my last post, I was really anxious about our trip to Boston, which caused me to be quite sick before and during our trip. My parents and Dave were especially supportive on this trip and didn't force me to do anything I wasn't comfortable with. So, even though we were there as part of a larger group I skipped out on almost all of our group festivities. This was the only way I could stay calm enough to make it through the weekend. But, I did venture out of the hotel room for a few things.

Friday we got to Houston in the morning and after checking into our hotel and getting some lunch, we headed to the race expo to pick up our stuff. Dave and I are not huge fans of crowds and expos, so we got in, got our stuff, did our thing and got the heck out of there. In contrast my parents spent FOREVER in the expo looking, checking out, and grabbing everything.

Because of the Olympic trials going on, the US Olympic Committee had set up a little village outside of the expo where you could try out different sports. Dave and I got our "credentials" and tried out weightlifting, boxing, table tennis (which kicked our buns), biking, and wheelchair basketball (the hardest thing EVER). Check out our awesome pictures from the Olympic Village.

Saturday morning we watched the Olympic Trials, obviously. We were stationed at the 2,10,18, and 26 mile marks. Our friend and many time relay teammate, Mandy, is supa-fast! and earned her spot to run in the trials. We cheered very loudly for her.

And I love me some Meb. I'm so happy for him.

After the trials we headed back to the Olympic Village where I was super excited to get my picture taken with the one and only Doc Patton.

The rest of the day was spent resting and preparing for the race on Sunday...

Cupcake Crawl

I'm starting to wonder if this is a foodie blog instead of a running/triathlon blog?

One thing we were excited to try out in Washington DC was all the cupcakes. We had done our research, consulted websites, mapped them out, and were ready to tackle the task. We decided on four stores: Georgetown Cupcake, Sprinkles, Hello Cupcake!, and Baked and Wired.

Sprinkles

Location: 3015 M Street NW, Washington DC, 20007

Menu: Available here.

What we ate: M-Black and white, red velvet. D-Coconut, Cherry Blossom

Thoughts: We hadn't initially planned on going to Sprinkles, but trying to go to Georgetown Cupcake on a Saturday night was ridiculous. The line was an hour and 40 minute wait. We were too hungry to wait that long. Instead we went to Sprinkles, waited in line only 20 minutes, picked up a pizza and headed back to the hotel. M-My black and white cupcake was really dry, a little overbaked, and maybe had sat out too long. But then several days later, after we had gotten home, I ate the red velvet cupcake and it was really good. Maybe I got a bad batch of the black and white. D-The coconut cupcake was a little on the dry side as well, but the frosting was yummy. The cherry blossom was probably a little better, though I didn't taste the cherry flavor in the cake.

Hello Cupcake!

Location: 1361 Connecticut Ave. NW, Washington DC, 20036

Menu: Available here.

What we ate: M-hc original (vanilla with vanilla frosting), heart of darkness. D-24 carrot, vanilla gorilla

Thoughts: Unlike the other cupcake shops, this one was not in Georgetown. This one was in the heart of Dupont Circle. No waiting in line either! Hello Cupcake is known for being all natural so there is no red velvet or anything else that uses artificial colors or flavors. M-The vanilla/vanilla combination was very good but the heart of darkness, aka, CHOCOLATE!!! was soooo good. I mean, SO GOOD! D-I started with the 24 carrot cupcake, which was a good moist carrot cake with a delicious cream cheese topping, not too sweet. Vanilla gorilla was a yummy banana based cake, almost like banana bread, again with a cream cheese frosting. Yum!

Baked and Wired

Location: 1052 Thomas Jefferson Street NW, Washington DC, 20007

Menu: Available here.

What we ate: M-red velvet. D-Strawberry, Menage a Trois

Thoughts: This place was cool. It had a great laid back vibe, like something you'd find on a college campus. The cupcake selections were displayed really artistically. I liked that there were three distinct areas of this store: baked goods, coffee bar, and sitting area. We would have loved to stay and hang out. Baked and Wired is known for making small batches of baked goods. The cupcakes are bigger than most. M-I didn't actually eat this cupcake until later in the day. It was good, but I've had better. The presentation and overall love of the store made up for the lack of flavor. D-I was really looking forward to the strawberry after reading about it. The cupcake actually has real strawberries baked right in! It was really good, although the frosting was a little too sweet for me. The menage a trois cake was a chocolate cake, filled with a raspberry jam center, and topped with vanilla frosting. Yeah, it WAS that good.

Georgetown Cupcake

Location: 3301 M Street NW, Washington DC, 20007

Menu: Available here.

What we ate: M-chocolate mint. D-mint cookies and cream

Thoughts: After our failed attempt at waiting in line at Georgetown Cupcake on Saturday, we decided to order ahead of time and just pick up our cupcakes. But come Monday we had forgotten, so we just went to the store at the beginning of the day, right when it opened. We only had to wait in line a few minutes. M-I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about the quality of cupcakes from a store that has it's own TV show. I've that the cake from those a lot of those "fancy cake" shows actually tastes really bad. But, this was far and away the best cupcake I had all weekend. The mint frosting was to die for! And the cupcake was so moist it did not fall apart. Well worth the wait. D-I think Meredith's was just a touch better, but mine was pretty great as well. Great cake, nice sweet-but-not-oversweet frosting, and both were full of crumbled Oreos.

My Trip to the Top of the Arch

On our way to Kansas a week ago, Dave and I stopped in St. Louis to take a trip to the top of the arch. I had never been to St. Louis (or Missouri for that matter) and Dave hadn't been to the arch since he was a child, so we thought it would be fun. It's starting to seem a little weird (or funny) that everywhere we travel we like to go vertical. In Italy we went to the top of every single church and bell tower we saw. In Switzerland we went to the top of the mountains. In NYC, we went to the top of the Empire State Building. Etc., etc., etc.

Anyway, here's some pictures of our trip...

Posing outside the arch before going inside.

The ticket to open the door for the ride to the top.

The door to the "pod."

Inside the pod.

Dave and I right before our journey to the top.

Needless to say, I did not enjoy the ride.

We made it to the top!!!

It's pretty scary that you can see the bottom of the structure from the top.

Jumping for joy that I'm back down on the ground.

My Heart is Broken

The day after I graduated college in 2001, Dave and I (before we were married) along with a group from our church went on a week-long trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. We spent the week learning about Haitian culture, caring for sick children, and being immersed in a third-world country. The week was rough for me. It was HOT and it smelled and I really struggled to eat as the smells and sights were too much for me to handle. When we arrived back in the U.S., I kissed the ground and knew I could never be a missionary. Although I knew I wouldn't be spending my time in Haiti, Dave and I did spend our money as we sponsored a child there for nearly 10 years. My heart has always been in Haiti.

Yesterday I was at the gym and on the TV they showed devastating pictures coming out of Port-au-Prince. An earthquake had hit and it was really bad. Today we've gotten word that the home we stayed in there has been totally destroyed. And the street where the hospital was where we worked has also been leveled. This morning I watched the news and just cried. My heart is broken.

I found this picture today of Dave and I in front of the Presidential Palace.

I pulled this picture off MSNBC today. This is what the Presidential Palace looks like now.

This picture is pretty tame compared to the rest of the devastation. If you can help, please do.

Leaving, Again

2009 seems to be the year of travel. We've been to Chicago, North Carolina, Boston, Alabama, Yellowstone, Idaho, and tomorrow we leave for the OC. This is the closest to a "vacation" we're going to get this year. We didn't choose this one, though. Yep, we're going to Laguna Beach because I'm a bridesmaid in a wedding this weekend. OMG!

The week will be filled with "festivities". All of which I have to wear a dress for. Gah! (I'm sure pictures will be taken.) But, I'm still making time to do things I want to do. Because of my broken finger I can't play in the ocean or pool like I want to, however, I plan on at least sticking my toes in the ocean. My aunt and uncle live in the area and we're getting together for coffee (or in my case, hot chocolate). And finally, I've got a long run planned with my friend jeff and some of his running friends.

If anyone else wants to hook up out there, drop me a line. Our evenings are filled, but lunches or breakfasts are available.

Vacation Day #1

Last night around 11:00pm I booked my trip to Alabama. Around 1:00am I finally went to bed. And at 5:45am I got up and finished packing. My flight itinerary was a mess: Columbus to Cleveland, Cleveland to Philly, Philly to Charlotte, Charlotte to Pensacola. My first flight left at 9:55am. Because Dave had to get to work, he dropped me at the airport around 7:45am. I used the kiosk to try to check myself in but only got to pay for my bag and then it said I needed assistance. Two women came over to help me. One was putting on my tag while the other one said, "ugh, yuck. Your itinerary is awful." No crap! She said they needed my seat to Cleveland so she rerouted me from Columbus to Houston, Houston to Pensacola, and I would get in two hours earlier. And it didn't cost me anymore. Sold! She gave me a fake boarding pass and told me I needed to go because the flight left at 8:30 and it was now 8:00. I got through security, which kinda surprised me since I had a one-way ticket that I had purchased less than 12 hours ago, and made it down to the gate while trying to call Dave and my mom. As I arrived at the gate they were calling my name. I was given a real boarding pass and I was on the plane.

The rest of the trip was pretty adventure-less. It's HOT down here with a huge side-scoop of humidity. I had to go over two big bridges which my dad laughed the whole way and made fun of me. The teasing doesn't end no matter how old you get. Tomorrow will be a full helping of beach and hopefully I'll have some pictures to share.

And Coach, I found a track. :)

Here Fishy Fishy

Today Dave and I visited the North Carolina Aquarium. The following is my pictorial essay of the day. :)

Right after the following picture was taken, I totally freaked out. You just don't touch sting rays and I did!! Notice the absolute terror on my face...

My favorite artistic picture of the day:

And my favorite fun photo of the day:

Road Trip!

While at lunch today Dave and I counted up all the states we are going to visit this year:

Ohio

West Virginia

Virginia

North Carolina

Massachusetts

Indiana

Illinois

Wisconsin

Minnesota

South Dakota

Wyoming

Montana

Idaho

Washington

Oregon

Utah

Arizona

New Mexico

Colorado

Kansas

Missouri

California

That's 22 if you're keeping count. And over the last two days we visited the first 4 on the list. We are now here in North Carolina. I checked in at the race and it looks REALLY small. The race course looks flat, flat, flat, except I have to cross a bridge (YIKES!) and it's a really steep climb and descent over that bridge.

We're watching the news right now...we just found out why traffic was horrific today, President Obama was visiting Camp Lejeune and we also were driving by Camp Lejeune.

Anyway, here's a picture of the two of us on the beach. This year we're going from Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Here's the Atlantic side:
